How to Experience God’s Presence in St. Louis (Even on an Ordinary Tuesday)

· Revelation Church STL

You know the feeling. You sing every word on Sunday, you nod at all the right moments, and somewhere on 270 at rush hour you wonder if you actually met with God or just had a nice morning. If you have ever asked how to experience God’s presence in St. Louis, and not only on the days the worship set hits just right, you are in good company. Whether you live in Creve Coeur, Chesterfield, Maryland Heights, or anywhere else in West County, this one is for you.

Here’s the deal. Most of us don’t have a God problem. We have a distance problem. We believe he is real. We believe he is good. And we still live most of the week like he is somewhere across town. Some of you are tired of going through the motions. You pray at red lights, you whisper something over the dishes, and you wonder if any of it is landing. If you have ever felt that way beneath a busy schedule, you are not alone. We wrote about that ache in finding hope in St. Louis, too.

Can I tell you something? That ache is not proof that something is wrong with you. It is proof that you were made for more. Learning to experience God’s presence in St. Louis is not about a secret formula or a louder band. It is about a tent, a young man named Joshua, and a Father who has always wanted to be with you.

Experience God’s Presence in St. Louis: What Moses Shows Us

Most people remember Exodus for the Red Sea. Walls of water, dry ground, Hollywood-level drama. But I would say the bigger miracle comes later. After Israel’s worst failure, God chooses to dwell with his people again. Moses pitches a tent outside the camp and calls it the tent of meeting. Here is what happened when he walked into it:

“As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to their tent.” (Exodus 33:9-10, New International Version)

Look at what the people did. They did not shrug and go back to their business. They stood. They worshiped. Worship was not a performance for them. It was the natural response to God showing up. If you want to experience God’s presence in St. Louis, start by remembering who is showing up.

Then comes the verse that should stop all of us in our tracks:

“The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.” (Exodus 33:11, New International Version)

Face to face. As one speaks to a friend. Not a distant king you are afraid to approach. A God who talks with his people the way you would talk with someone you trust.

The Tent Is Now Inside You

Under the old arrangement, you had to walk outside the camp to find the tent of meeting. Then Jesus came. He met us in the flesh, and he was crucified outside the city walls because there is nothing he would allow to stand between him and you. The tent of meeting became a person.

And it did not stop there. Scripture tells us the same Spirit who raised Jesus is at work in those who belong to him:

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” (Romans 8:11, New International Version)

Read that slowly. The tent is not just outside the camp anymore. It is not just a cross on a hill. It is inside every believer, which means you do not have to wait for a building, a band, or a Sunday to meet with God. This is why it is possible to experience God’s presence in St. Louis on a Tuesday afternoon in a minivan on Olive Blvd.

So stop treating your faith like it is ordinary. Stop treating a Tuesday like it is just a Tuesday. You are carrying something holy. And Paul says that when we turn toward the Lord, something starts to show:

“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18, New International Version)

Moses’ face shone after he was with God. Can the people around you tell that you have been with him? Not weird. Not fake. Just different, in the best way.

Joshua Stayed When Everyone Else Left

Back to that last line in Exodus 33:11. Moses went back to camp. Business as usual. But Joshua did not leave the tent.

That detail is not filler. Joshua son of Nun is the man who later led Israel into the Promised Land. Moses himself never entered it. The one who got to lead the people home was the one who lingered when everyone else moved on.

Here’s what I believe, and it is what the Bible keeps pointing to: there is a blessing for people who linger. When we stay in his presence, we find forgiveness for the guilt and shame we have been dragging around. We find freedom, a sense of purpose, and hope for what is next. I am not handing you a formula or a timeline. I am telling you where Scripture points us to look. No clever talk can break a chain. Only God can. And he is not hard to find.

3 Simple Steps to Experience God’s Presence in St. Louis This Week

So how do you actually do this? Not in theory. On a real week, with real traffic on 270 and a real to-do list. Here are three practical steps that fit the way Scripture describes meeting with God. None of them requires a theology degree.

Step 1: Pick Your Tent

Moses had a tent. You need a place and a time. It does not have to be fancy. A chair by the window. Your car in the parking lot before you walk into work in Clayton or Chesterfield. A bench in Forest Park on your lunch break. The point is to decide ahead of time that this is where you meet with him. If you wait until you feel like it, you will never get there.

When you walk in, you do not need the right words. Say what is true. “God, I’m here. I’m distracted. I need you.” That is a real prayer. And if anxiety is the loudest voice in your head right now, our post on finding peace in a busy St. Louis life can help.

Step 2: Worship Before You Win

Here is something that surprises a lot of people. In the Old Testament, when Judah faced an invading army, King Jehoshaphat did something that made no tactical sense. He “appointed men to sing to the Lord” and sent them out at the head of the army (2 Chronicles 20:21, New International Version). Then this happened:

“As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.” (2 Chronicles 20:22, New International Version)

The worshippers went first. Not after the victory. Before it. I am not telling you worship is a trick to get an outcome. I am telling you it puts you in the right place in the fight: leaning on his strength instead of your own. Put on a song in the car and say thank you out loud. Then pray this back to him:

“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:2-5, New International Version)

Name those benefits out loud. Forgiven. Redeemed. Loved. It is one of the simplest ways I know to experience God’s presence in St. Louis, or anywhere, when your emotions are not cooperating.

Step 3: Linger Longer Than You Planned

Joshua stayed. So when the song ends, stay. Most of us pray like we are ordering at a drive-through: say it, get it, move on. Try the opposite. Put your phone in another room. Set a timer for five minutes longer than feels comfortable. Sit. Listen. Read a few verses out loud and let them settle. If you want help recognizing when God is speaking, start with our guide to hearing God’s voice. You might feel something. You might not. Linger anyway.

Presence is a relationship, and relationships are built on time, not intensity. If you are new to this, start small. Five extra minutes tomorrow is better than an hour you never get to.

Then Go: Experience God’s Presence in St. Louis All Week Long

Here is the part we skip. God’s presence is never just for you to enjoy. When he meets with you, he sends you. If you have been with him, it should show up in how you serve at work, how you treat your neighbors, and how you talk about Jesus. Not sure where to start? Here are some volunteer opportunities in St. Louis.

Take it into the car ride home. Take it into Monday meetings. Take it into the house when the kids are going crazy. You do not leave God’s presence behind when you leave a building. You carry it everywhere, because it lives in you.

And if you are wondering whether any of this is for you, whether you have to have it all together first, hear me clearly. You don’t. If you have never given your life to Jesus, today can be the day. Tell him you are sorry for the ways you have gone your own way. Believe that he died for you and rose again. Invite him in. That is where every real answer to how to experience God’s presence in St. Louis begins: with a yes to Jesus.

Experience God’s Presence in St. Louis: Your Questions Answered

How can I experience God’s presence in St. Louis if I have never been to church?

You can start right where you are. Talk to God in your own words, ask Jesus to lead your life, and spend a few quiet minutes listening. God’s presence is not limited to a building. Then find a church family, like ours in Creve Coeur, where you can keep growing.

Is it normal not to feel God’s presence?

Yes. Feelings come and go, and God’s presence does not depend on them. Scripture says the Spirit lives in believers (Romans 8:11). Keep showing up, keep worshiping, and keep lingering, even on quiet days. If it has been a long dry season, talk with a pastor or small group leader.

What is a Spirit-filled church, and what happens on a Sunday?

A Spirit-filled church believes God is present and active today and that the Holy Spirit empowers believers. At Revelation Church STL we are also Bible-based, and we do things with order. Sunday is casual and lasts about an hour, with worship, a message from the Bible, and time to pray.
